Six Qadri supporters killed in violent protests

LAHORE / FAISALABAD: Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri announced on August 3 in a fiery speech that he and his supporters would observe Youm-e-Shuhuda (martyrs day) on August 10 in Lahore to commemorate those killed during clashes on June 17 between PAT supporters and police.
The June clashes left at least 14 party workers, including two women, dead and 85 others injured in Lahore’s Model Town.
Since the Youm-e-Shuhuda announcement, along with which he had also ‘predicted’ that the current government would not stay in place beyond this month, there has been a resurgence in the standoff between Qadri’s supporters and the government.
In response, the government blocked off roads leading to Qadri’s house and deployed heavy contingents of police.
Violence broke out on August 8 after hundreds of baton-wielding PAT supporters clashed with law enforcers and tried to remove shipping containers used to block roads leading to Qadri’s house and the place that they were supposed to gather for ‘Youm-e-Shuhuda.’
